Lesson 9: Creating a Motivating Climate Organizational, Interpersonal and Group Communication

    • Come to class prepared with Three (3) ways that could motivate nurses on your unit.
      • Lead by example-set a high standard. Project positive energy & a drive for excellence.
      • Create an environment conducive to the development of human potential.
      • Create opportunities for high job satisfaction.
      • Do not over manage!
      • Fast bucks for good deeds! (Positive reinforcement)
      • Charge Nurse highlights nurse in report, then give a note to that nurse explaining appreciation.
      • Raises by peer evals, attendance at staff meetings, etc.
    • Come to class prepared to discuss the difference between assertive and aggressive communication.
      • Assertive and aggressive are not synonyms.
      • Assertive communication is not rude or insensitive behavior; rather, it is having an informed voice that insists on being heard. It always a people to express themselves in direct, honest, and appropriate ways that do not infringe on another person’s rights. Uses I statements.
      • Aggressive communication is when people express themselves in a direct and often hostile manner that infringes on another person’s rights. “Winning at all costs” or demonstrating self-excellence.
    • In your blog (Reflective Journal), Record your thoughts concerning motivation. Include an example of when you felt motivated/not motivated as a result of a manager’s actions. Thoughtfully record a personal career development plan.
      • Motivation is one of the hardest things to achieve in management because motivation can only happen within an individual. Managers can help create situations that are conducive to motivation. I really like how my manager has a system to recognize good work. She highlights the nurses that are highlighted by the Charge Nurses during a shift by placing a note in their box. I know that these notes make a huge difference to me after an especially hard shift it helps me want to continue to work hard. My personal motivation is usually based on a personal high standard. I uphold myself to a high standard and expect others to too; sometimes I get frustrated when others are not as committed to service excellence. See my career development plan in the last post.
